Joan was a constant life companion and helpmate to her husband Jim and they lived a very full life together for 59 years. They were married on March 13, 1963, and lived in Moundsville, West Virginia; Raton, New Mexico; Craig, Colorado and Grand Junction, Colorado. She was the number one fan of her children and was always willing to come alongside her family in all life situations.
Joan was an elementary school teacher and was promoted to fulltime mother early in their marriage. She was an active member of the woman’s group at the First Christian Church in Craig, Colorado. She taught Sunday School and volunteered her time in many other activities that her children were involved in.
Joan had a love and appreciation for flowers and knew the names of many, many different species. She loved to spend time maintaining a beautiful yard at her home and extended her time and talents maintaining flowers at the church she was a member of. Joan was also very creative and spent much of her time redecorating her home and crafting other special items to display. She loved antiques and was always interested in stopping at different shops along her and Jim’s many road trip adventures across America. She and Jim shared a fondness for adventures and family, devoting much of their time to creating memories and loving those close to them.
The song You Needed Me by Anne Murray comes to mind when thinking about how special Joan was to her family:
“I cried a tear, you wiped it dry. I was confused, you cleared my mind. I sold my soul, you bought back for me. And held me up and gave me dignity. Somehow you needed me…
You held my hand when it was cold. When I was lost, you took me home. You gave me hope when I was at the end. And turned my lies back into truth again. You even called me friend.
You gave me strength to stand alone again. To face the world out on my own again. You put me high upon a pedestal. So high that I could almost see eternity. You needed me you needed me…”
Joan was constant and consistent, and she will be missed deeply.
