John Albert Pond, 87, of Grand Junction, Colorado, was reunited with his loving wife, Karla, with whom he had enjoyed 63 years of marriage. Karla, forever John's partner in love and parenting, went to prepare for their Heavenly life together two years prior. Soon after John took Karla as his bride, he moved her to Maine for three years where John served in the United States Army. Their marriage was a long and happy relationship, characterized by hard work, perseverance, and humor as John was known for his quick wit and love of laughter.
During their time in Maine, John began his role as a loving father to Leslie Irvin and Lori Prough; both of whom reside in Oklahoma. After his Army discharge, the couple returned to Colorado where John fathered three more children: Louise Ferguson of Longmont, Colorado, John Pond, and Karl Pond, both of whom reside in Grand Junction, Colorado. Besides his children, John enjoyed a loving, parental relationship with John Junior's partner, Julie Stewart. Also survived by John are 17 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. John had five siblings, Jacqueline Loveall, Vernon, (deceased), Glen (deceased), and James. John also had a soft heart for small dogs and was surely met with many wagging tails as he went through Heaven's door.
John was the third child of Emmet and Marjorie Pond, born on August 17, 1936, in Grand Junction, Colorado where he spent most of his life. Although he held numerous jobs in his life, he is best known for his work as an over-the-road truck driver. His job allowed him to travel across the United States, and despite being away for long periods, he stayed connected with his family through frequent phone calls and a large map of the U.S. to help them visualize his location.
John enjoyed many activities, including water skiing, hunting, and fishing. His last outdoor activity was to ride an electric, recumbent, three-wheeled bike around his neighborhood. A devoted Denver Broncos fan, he rarely missed a game. Known for his sense of humor and storytelling. John started each day with a cup of coffee and a crossword puzzle, and he was always in the middle of a book or magazine.
John entered hospice care one week where he died peacefully, surrounded by his children.
In accordance with John's wishes, he was cremated. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on August 7th at First Presbyterian Church located at 3940 27 1/2 Rd in Grand Junction, CO.
