Roy Lyn Shirley, 62, of Anchorage, Alaska passed away on May 7, 2024 in Grand Junction, Colorado after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He was born on September 6, 1961 four minutes after his identical twin, Ray, in Anchorage, Alaska.
Roy was a devoted Christian who spent his life serving his Lord and Savior. He dedicated much of his time to teaching Bible study classes to individuals of all ages and lent his voice to church choirs and the Praise Team at Monument Baptist Church for over two decades.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his Aunt Iris Palmer, brothers Darrell Shepherd, Ray (Dianna) Shirley, Neal Shirley, Philip (Stephanie) Shepherd, niece Stephanie (Kyle) Jenkins, nephew Logan Shirley, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. Roy was preceded in death by his grandparents Dallas and Margaret Newell, parents WA and Marjorie Shepherd, and cousin Pam Moore.
He was a proud alumnus at West Anchorage High School and Wayland Baptist University where he received a Bachelor's degree in history.
Roy and his then wife, Helen, opened one of the first video stores in Anchorage in the 80s.. Later Roy also worked for Blockbuster Video. After moving to Grand Junction in the late 90s Roy began teaching at Bookcliff Christian School.
In his leisure time, Roy enjoyed collecting movies on video tape, DVDs, and music on vinyl, cassette tapes, and CDs. His favorite artists included Wayne Newton, B.J. Thomas, Elvis Presley, The Lennon Sisters, Engelbert Humperdinck, and Donny Osmond.
A service to honor Roy's life will be held at Monument Baptist Church, 486 23 Road, Grand Junction, CO, on Saturday, May 11th, at 1:00 pm. The service will also be live-streamed for those who cannot attend in person.
